History of Tic Tac Toe

Three-in-a-row games are ancient, and the modern grid game has carried several names across the world.

The British name is noughts and crosses; the American name tic tac toe became the more common term internationally during the twentieth century.

Because the classic rules are solved, variants have long tried to restore tension. Disappearing tic tac toe does it by limiting each player to three pieces.
